Tips for improving your relationship with the Quran

Tips for improving your relationship with the Quran

Are you one of those people who rarely touches the Quran? Or do you read daily, but don’t find it is having the impact on you that it should? Whatever the case may be, these are some simple tips that can help you connect with the Quran. 1. Before you touch it, check your heart The key to really benefiting from the Quran is to check your heart first, before you even touch Allah’s book. Ask yourself, honestly, why you are reading it. Is it to just get some information and to let it drift away from you later? Remember that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was described by his wife as a “walking Quran”: in other words, he didn’t just read and recite the Quran, he lived it. 2. Do your Wudu (ablution) Doing your Wudu is good physical and mental preparation to remind you you’re not reading just another book. You are about to interact with God, so being clean should be a priority when communicating with Him. 3. Read only 5 minutes everyday Too often, we think we should read Quran for at least one whole hour. If you aren’t in the habit of reading regularly, this is too much. Start off with just five minutes daily. If you took care of step one, Insha Allah (God willing), you will notice that those five minutes will become ten, then half an hour, then an hour, and maybe even more! 4. Make sure you understand what you’ve read Five minutes of reading the Quran in Arabic is good, but you need to understand what you’re reading. Make sure you have a good translation of the Quran in the language you understand best. Always try to read the translation of what you’ve read that day . 5. Remember, the Quran is more interactive than screen In an age of “interactive” Mobile and computer programs, a number of people think books are passive and boring. But the Quran is not like that. Remember that when you read Quran, you are interacting with Allah. He is talking to you, so pay attention. 6. Don’t just read, listen too There are now everyone has an audio Quran on their mobile phone, many of them with translations. When going to work or driving, use it in addition to reading the Qur’an daily, not as a substitute for it. 7. Make Dua (supplication) Ask Allah to guide you when you read the Quran. Your aim is to sincerely, for the love of Allah, interact with Him by reading, understanding and applying His blessed words. Making Dua to Allah for help and guidance will be your best tool for doing this.

Tips for Memorization of Quran

“Hifz” or simply memorization of the Quran is a dream for every Muslim. However, most brothers and sisters complain that due to their daily hectic schedules, they don’t have the time to devote to the memorization of the Quran. We spoke to several Islamic scholars, many of whom had committed the Quran to memory and asked them for effective tips on how to master Quran memorization in spite of being busy with both work and household duties. The tips they gave (specifically targeted at busy individuals) include the following: 1- Rise Up Early In the Morning Be the first to wake up and if possible first offer Fajr prayers in the mosque. When you are done with the early morning prayers, instead of dedicating your time to frivolous activities like watching TV or surfing the internet, spend a several minutes memorizing the Quran. 2- Set Realistic Goals and Memorize Less Than You Think You Can You may be tempted to memorize one or two pages per day as this seems to be a realistic goal. However, you may soon give up due to lack of time. Instead, lower down your expectations and start by memorizing three to five lines daily. Dedicating at least 20 minutes to this kind of memorization technique will work for even the busiest folks. 3- Use the Familiarity Technique Initially, as you are starting out to memorize the Quran, you will naturally come across unfamiliar verses. Therefore, in order to commit them to memory, you can write five verses onto a piece of paper and learn them by heart. Read those verses over and over again over the course of the next few weeks in order to retain them to memory fully. 4- Keep Daily Verses Close at Hand Use every spare moment throughout the day to read and memorize the lines of the Quran that you are committing to memory. For example, you may have several free minutes during the time you are waiting for a bus, an appointment at a doctor’s clinic etc. You can keep the list of the verses of the day in your handbag or pocket for easy access and refer to them whenever you are struggling to remember what you’re learning. 5- Recite What You Memorize In Every Salah To further cement what you are learning into memory, you can recite everyday verses in the five daily prayers. In each raka, you can alternate between the five verses you learnt the same day or the previous days. 6- Track Your Goals If one page of the Quran contains at last 15 lines, by the end of the week you would have memorized two pages of the Quran and the pattern would continue until you have fully committed the Quran to memory. Additionally, you can learn verse by verse with translation and ponder over the meanings of the same. 7- Distraction Free Environment It is best to memorize the Quran in a secluded place with little or no distraction at all. By ensuring that the environment is quiet, you will be able to increase focus and thus be able to retain what you memorize. For example, as we have earlier mentioned, early morning memorization sessions are very effective because of the minimum distractions at that time. Additionally, you can turn off your cell phone and laptop and focus solely on the Quran so as to increase attention. 8- Review What You Memorize as Many Times as Possible In a Single Day In order to memorize the Quran, it is important to revise every verse you learn. You can use the following 3 method technique to ensure that you retain everything you have learnt: Begin a new memorization at the start of the day Revise the lines you learnt in the previous week before you embark on beginning new memorization. The logic behind this arrangement is that the newest memorization is the one which is often forgotten first. Therefore, revising the previous portions of the Quran before will prove to be a good warm up exercise for your brain. Moreover, you will be able to build connections between the previously memorized material and the new one you are about to memorize. During the same day at another time, revise the material you learnt before the previous seven days. Additionally, you can make use of Quran memorization apps to keep yourself in line with your memorization goals. In conclusion, you will find that it doesn’t matter how busy you are, if you try and implement the tips mentioned above, you will be able to memorize small bits of the Quran and eventually complete memorization over a period of time. Nevertheless, the key to memorizing the Quran is consistency, dedication, and hard work. Moreover, the blessings of doing so are immense, not only will your imaan and taqwa increase, but so will your self-esteem and confidence.

Introduction of Tafsir

The literal meaning of tafsir in the Arabic language is to open or to explain, interpret or comment. Technically, the science of tafsir is a branch of knowledge in which the meanings of the Quran are explained and its injunctions and wisdoms are described openly and clearly (al-Burhan). Addressing the Holy Prophet, the Glorious Quran says: “We revealed the Quran to you so that you explain to the people what has been sent down to them.” (16:44) The Holy Quran also says: “Surely, Allah did a great favor to Muslims when He sent a Messenger to them from among them who would recite His verses before them and purify them and teach them the Book and the Wisdom”. (3:164) Keeping this in view, it should be noted that the Holy Prophet not only taught the words of the Quran to the people but he also explained them in detail. This is why, on some occasions, the revered Companions had to devote years at a time to learning a single surah. Until such time that the Holy Prophet graced the mortal world with his presence, seeking the explanation of a Quranic verse did not pose much of a problem. When the Companions faced any difficulty in understanding a verse, they would simply turn to the Prophet (upon him blessings and peace). Later, however, it became necessary that the tafsir of the Quran be preserved as a permanent branch of knowledge so that, along with the words of the Noble Quran, its correct meaning remain protected and conserved for the Muslim Ummah as well, and so heretics and deviants could find no room for distortion of its meanings. So, with the grace and tawfiq of Allah Almighty, the Ummah accomplished this wonderful mission with such efficiency that today we can say without any doubt or fear of rebuttal that not only have the words of this Last Book of Allah been protected but also its correct explanation transmitted to us through the Holy Prophet and his Companions. In what ways did the Muslim Ummah protect and preserve the science? What extreme hardships did they face in its pursuit? How many stages did this struggle encompass? All this has a long and fascinating history which cannot be taken up in the present context. The intention here is to mention briefly the sources of Quranic exegesis and how these sources have been utilized in explaining the Noble Quran by the countless books on tafsir available in countless languages. The sources of Quranic exegesis are six: 1. Quran: The first source of the knowledge of tafsir is the Quran itself. Accordingly, it happens very often that a certain point which is brief and requires explanation is invariably clarified by some other verse of the Quran. For instance, in the following verse of Surat al-Fatihah, “Guide us on the straight path, the path of those on whom You have blessed…”, it is not clear here as to who are those whom Allah Almighty has blessed. But, in another verse, they have been identified very clearly where it is said: “So, these are the people whom Allah Almighty has blessed, being the prophets, their true followers, the martyrs (in the way of Allah) and the righteous.” (4:69) Therefore, when commentators explain a Quranic verse, they first check to see if a tafsir of the verse is already existent elsewhere in the Quran itself. If such an explanatory verse exists, they elect to adhere to it as their first choice. 2. Hadith: The words and the deeds of the Holy Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) are called hadith, and as it has been stated earlier, Allah Almighty sent him with the Quran solely for the purpose of explaining, openly and explicitly, the correct meanings of the Quran to people. Consequently, he discharged this duty with grace and excellence both by word and deed. In fact, his whole blessed life is, after all, a practical tafsir of Quran. It is for this reason that respected commentators, in order to understand the Quran, have laid the greatest emphasis on the hadith as the second source of tafsir and it is in the light of hadiths that they have determined the meanings of the Book of Allah. However, because all sorts of narrations – sound, weak, and fabricated – are included in hadith, research-oriented commentators do not accept a narration as trustworthy until it withstands the principles used in the scrutiny of hadith narrations. Hence, simply finding a hadith report somewhere and then employing it as a source of Quranic commentary is not correct because of the very likely possibility that the report is weak or even contradictory to stronger reports. Without a doubt, hadith verification and criticism is a delicate matter and venturing therein is the exclusive prerogative of those who have spent years in mastering this field of knowledge. 3. Narrations of Companions: The noble Sahabah, or Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all), had received their education directly from the Holy Prophet (upon him blessings and peace). In addition, they were personally present on the scene when verses were revealed, and they had themselves witnessed the circumstances and backgrounds of the Quranic revelation. Therefore, naturally, the recorded statements of these blessed souls are far more authentic and trustworthy in explaining the Noble Quran. Hence, in the case of verses the explanation of which is not found in the Quran or Hadith, statements recorded from the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) are given the highest priority. Consequently, if there is a consensus of Companions on the explanation of a certain verse, the commentators follow just that and explaining it in any way otherwise is not considered permissible. If the statements of Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) differ in the interpretation (tafsir) of a certain verse, then the commentators who come later examine them in the light of various proofs and arguments and then determine which interpretation or explanation should be

How to Memorize the Quran?

Before memorization tips: Be sincere and renew your intention. Seek Allah’s help: when you plan, memorize, revise, lose motivation, lack understanding. Turn to him, they are His words and He alone can teach you them. Never underestimate the power of du’aa in sujood. Write down a list of your friends/ family members/ people who will be part of your project. Be it by encouraging or memorizing with you. Say NO often: Cancel unnecessary meetings/ activities. Cut back on things you are used to, to find more time to get into the mood and start memorizing. Keep away from sins: Always repent if you once feel messed up! Remember that Allah is by your side and seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan and keep going. We are not perfect at the end and a sin will prevent you from continuing only if you insist, remember this! Find a recitation/ Tajweed teacher: S/he will teach and help you recite the verses properly and follow up with you. Your teacher could be your mom, dad or siblings at home (if they can recite Qur’an with Tajweed). Use one Mus’haf  (Quran): So you can use a pencil to mark words and underline verses. Try to get a standard size Qur’an, not too big, that you can’t hold and take it everywhere you go, and not too small, that will be hard to memorize from, and you won’t be able to write on it. Know your memorization style: Whether using sign-language, copying in a notebook, raising your voice while reciting, writing the beginning of every verse, walking around while memorizing, listening to a reciter and repeating after him. You choose the best technique, and of course you can use more than one, according to your mood, time, place, etc. Set a flexible plan: It may seem the hardest part to some people. But if you do all the above points, I am sure everything else will be easy. A flexible plan means to have plan A and plan B. It means that you get to know your abilities and write down an action plan that suits you. It will be as easy to say: “I will memorize one page every day after Fajr and another before I sleep/ after ‘Ishaa.” Print out a schedule to follow up on your progress and that’s it! While-memorizing tips: Be that early-bird person: Wake up before Fajr time and memorize your required pages. It’s an advise given by most if not all Huffadh of the Qur’an. Turn off your devices: To avoid distractions and to deeply focus on what you intend to memorize. Recite, Read, and Repeat, (3R’s, rule): Make sure that you recite the page properly with Tajweed rules, listening to a reciter is really helpful. You can also recite the page you intend to memorize several times before you sleep and memorize it in the morning. Read the vague verses and words meanings from a Tafeer, so you understand what you are reciting. Mind-maps for chapters of the Qur’an are also helpful, (please do google them). Knowing the stories of the verses make memorization easy. Repeat the page/ verse over and over again until you are done with it. Dividing the page into parts according to their subject, and then gluing it together is also helpful. Take a break: A ten-minute break is a really good refresher. Do it often. Set time goals: Have a max goal of an hour/half an hour per page according to your ability, and by time, the more you memorize the easier it becomes. Revising Tips: Try not to only memorize, always remember that the Qur’an is so easily forgotten, so give yourself time to revise the pages you already memorized. The best way to make sure that your memorization is perfect is to recite the page while you are praying. You can do this in Tahajjud. Be productive in the time you spend in transportation. Revise a certain page or listen to reciter reading it over and over again. Write your own revision strategy when you finish it all, you can start with a group of friends (I really recommend this). When-lazy tips: Change your place and take a break! Go back to your friends-list: Call or meet one of them. They will be there for you and your mood will absolutely change. Watch a video about the Qur’an and the reward of reciting, memorizing and studying it. Learn about peoples experiences memorizing the Qur’an. Remind yourself with the many reasons why you started in the first place and why you should continue in this unique journey with the Qur’an. More Tips? For those who do not speak Arabic or know Tajweed it would be best if you spend some time learning those first, so you can memorize it correctly the first time. Hear as you learn, never stop listening to reciters as this will make it easier for you to read the Qur’an properly. And remember that Allah the Almighty says: “And We have certainly made the Qur’an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?” I personally recommend learning Arabic with online teacher Or you simply can join your local Masjid/ Islamic center to learn Arabic and the science of Tajweed. Regardless of your age or profession, you still can do it. There are hundreds of stories that will inspire you to take your first steps in this journey, just search YouTube and see how many stories will move you to tears. Do not delay: Start as soon as you finish reading this article. When you become a Hafiz, you’ll change in so many ways. Living with the Qur’an is a life-time journey that will always give meaning to your life and makes everything else in life so wonderful. I humbly ask Allah the Almighty to allow me four things: To finish revising the Qur’an in the way He pleases To have the “Sanad” — Ijaazah, linked to the Holy Prophet Muhammad, (ﷺ —
